Bread Or Crumbs For Local Artists In DStv’s Movie Room

Read Time:2 Minute, 45 Second

Aaahh! Almost a week fly past. But a whiff of excitement still hangs in the air.

Of course, happiness is a beautiful feeling-thingy. For that reason, jealous down. Actually, be happy for and with Thabile Ngwato. Come now, in addition, gcwala intokozo for Thokozani Nkosi. Well, because the NewsRoom Africa owners…,   Yes, the Ngwato Nkosi Group continues to secure the moneybag and says they have something in store for television viewers. Hence their latest cow number 113 and with the name Movie Room, targets DStv subscribers.

So, the date 27 August 2022 is set for the beginning of the twenty-four-hour broadcast platform. Not much gets revealed. Movie Room is ‘new, fresh and will be a locally-packaged movie channel. It is punted as a 24/7 playground for local and international movies. Enters Georgina Machiridza. She is MultiChoice’s head of content strategy and third-party channels. According to Machiridza, the Movie Room will ‘give DStv subscribers more entertainment selection options. A choice of movies to satisfy all tastes and seasons.’

What Amount of New, Lekker and Repeat will 113 have?

Consequently, in the back of the writer’s mind springs the South African white papers on broadcasting and arts and culture. The policy documents envision opening platforms for domestic cultural and creative sector content to thrive.  The kind of boom and bloom to play a role in creating employment and income-generating opportunities for locals. Basically, as part of the communications economy sector, broadcasting should contribute to matters of national economic empowerment.

So, curiosity arises about how much of a role the new channel would play on these crucial national matters. Thus, the writer dispatches some questions in the direction of Machiridza. Is 113 only for ready films, or will there be commissioning of new local works?  Over and above, what percentage balance will 113 have in terms of showing foreign versus home-brewed movies?  Indeed, even from across the continent. Then on the matter of viewers complaining about repeats of the likes of John Wick and Fast and The furious – what balance will the channel have in terms of old and new stuff?

Well, Machiridza promises to get the team to work on the inquiry. Right away. She makes this commitment on Tuesday, 02 August 2022. The response will appear once received.

The DStv Versus eMedia Competition Battles Continues

In the meantime, the Movie Room is a substitute. Because earlier this year, MultiChoice cancelled a channel carriage agreement with eMedia Investment. As a result, removed from the DStv platform on 30 May 2022 were the e.tv-packaged channels. These include eExtra, eMovies, eMovies Extra and eToonz.  Reports said the e.tv TV channels execute many on DStv in South Africa.

Then after their removal, a promise of a substitute new film channel gets made. But then again latest news is the Competition Appeal Court orders MultiChoice to put four e.tv-supplied TV channels back on DStv. The eMedia channels should be flighted for another six months, pending a Competition Commission investigation.

The Competition Tribunal initially ruled in favour of MultiChoice. But eMedia Investment appeals. The MultiChoice story, to the Competition Tribunal, about satellite transponder capacity constraints gets debunk by The eMedia.

Whatever the boardroom outcome, let the artists have their fair share of the pie.
