Nduduzo Makhathini

Long Live The Jaz’ le Musik Of KaNtu

Read Time:4 Minute, 31 Second

The invitation said come, in The Spirit Ntu. In fact, be there at 1 pm on June 16.

Actually…, Like birds, lovers of fine music and refined culture flocked to Breakfast at Kudjos in Constitution Hill, Braamfontein. However, three to four hours later…, The main business of the day was nowhere in sight. Still, most seemed not to be in a hurry. Aah! But in the writer, the self-importance started singing a double medley of Thandiswa Mzwai and lira.

“Ndiyekekeli Ndiyamba, ndiyamba…,” “Ndiyahamba mna sukundingqanda.”

Consequently, a couple of steps headed to the door. All of a sudden, a stubby Phantom appeared. NOOO! It was not of The Opera. To clarify. It was of a warrior-like departed grandmother of the writer. Aw! Yena nkgono o motsho-tshooo! U GOGO Nomasoja! Thus the matriarch spoke.

“Stay put, grandson,” she said.

“Because the wealth, the richness, the cream in your storytelling journey lies, sometimes, in what you may perceive to be uthuvi – bullshhh💩…”“AW! KODWA GOGO! What about the enjoyment of other nice life things? You know.., Yes, with other kids.” Of course, it was under his breath that the writer protested. UGOGO, with a notably stern face, gave him a hey! 😡Look. It was an authoritative and reprimanding ogle that spoke thus…,

“Mkhonza! In your youth, you have had your fair share of monate. Now it is time to focus on the job at hand.”

Therefore, with the pimple of a tail between his legs…, The writer capitulated. There was a story to be told.Well, by all means, it also helped that the sucker for a piece of good music in the writer was the dominant mood of the day.

In The Presence Of Ndu kaNtu

Now, come along…,

Right! Are you next to…, You know, one with the word, side-by-side? Aah! And therefore, you should see in your mind uNdu of KaNtu. He is wearing an iJazi that complements the long intshebe yakhe. Oh! Sorry, schuz me. Interpretation things. Ukuthula ebandleni! Ehe! Thana Siyavuma!

Yes! On top of his body suit, his soul is adorned, for reflection, with an invisible multi-pocket long coat of music. Aha! Things of feeling. You might not have heard him brag. But he could sing the Muddy Waters Hoochie Coochie Man blues. Yeah! Baby, and it would still suit…,

You know, it would look just fine on him – like the white sox in the feet of Michael Jackson. That is because he is Ndu, as in Ntu. Ehe! Angithi phela, a Mduduzi shortened is Mdu. So, why can’t Nduduzo be Ndu. Well, unless, of course, intshebe protests. Indeed, the man with a trade mark beard is a special breed.

First, Nduduzo Ndu Makhathini is a music mercantile. He means business with his art. That is to say, Makhathini takes serious his travels on this earth as ufakazi, through music, about the spirituality and greatness of the human spirit of people kaNtu, abantu. Yebo! In his veins run the nuances of spirited sounds of kaNtu. Through his fingers and toes…, The shades of sounds ooze to caress the ebony and ivories. In addition, the flow pours into the jar of a sound in mind and connected soul.

The Style of Ndu Makhathini

Over and above, Makhathini dabbles in various styles of musical expressions. Call him a jazz musician if it helps enhance an exclusive or sophisticated posture.

But behind the soul of his multidimensional sound root sounds of spiritually diverse Africa. Hint! Hint! During sound check, hours before the live performance launch of his latest offering, he flexed his vocal muscles with…, Wait for it…,

O! Man, he beautifully toyed with the maskandi hit Ngisebenzile Mama by MfazOmnyama. Moreover, amid that song flirting, the great spirit of Busi Mhlongo strolled in and felt like the Music In The Air of Letta Mbulu. Indeed…, The music from Ndu Makhathini is the kind lingering in the air as amakha athile. The name says it all. Ooh! Yes, he is of scented sounds of meditation scents of ankh that anchor the soul.

Furthermore, with the likes of Makhathini accompanied by the Ayanda Sikade, Linda Sikhakhane, Robin Fassie Kock, Dylan Tabisher, Stephen de Souza and Gontse Makhene of this world…Yeah! You get to swim, swirl and float in the music. Ehe! njengo swenka of music that is evergreen. Hoor net da!

In the meantime, check out In The Spirit of Ntu. It is his latest and tenth studio album with ten tracks. The writer is yet to particularly indulge in the album. But we recommend, because the live performance on June 16 was a good enough sales pitch. Moreover, we got one video for you to prove. Please, watch.

Now For A Few Words from Ndu

Ntu is an ancient African philosophy from which the idea of Ubuntu stems. Ubuntu says, ‘I am because you are – a deep invocation of collectiveness,” says Makhathini. “The wise ones tell us that our essence is ‘force.’ What our ancestors called NtuNtu is where our wholeness resides. It is our untouchable spiritual essence, for it is all, and all is with/in it. My improvisation searches for that moment of revelation. Or, in the African context – a moment of divination.”

In the Spirit of Ntu is the second in the Makhathini catalogue of albums to be released on Blue Note Records. The first release on the newly formed Blue Note Africa.
