SHE GOT HER GIG BACK

Read Time:2 Minute, 23 Second

South African artists worthy of the title Cabaret Artiste crave an environment that presents plenty of opportunities to do what they love the most.

Performing and earning a decent income, as opposed to being subject to government handouts, is the thirst artists wish to quench all their life.
Angithi niyavuma ma artist?
Ehe!
The late maskandi star Mfaz’Omnyama would say, thani ehe phela.
Anyway, my competent-artist-loving-heart skipped a bit.
The ticker in the rib cage jumped for joy upon seeing Suthukazi Arosi on the television screens the other day.
She was not performing a song but was acting in the Durban Gen, a daily medical drama set in Durban and screened on e.TV.
O! Yes, behind that stubborn face -that stunning voice- lives a natural actress.

Please share your thoughts on the Suthukazi Arosi performance below

So, some good people…,
Those will be friends.
Yes, they told Suthukazi about a role opening in Durban Gen.
The seasoned performer called, auditioned and bagged the role of Mahadebe.
“I have not worked in a long time, and I am thankful to God for the part in Durban Gen. It’s a role of usisi ondwebileyo, iqhalaqhala lo mama. The brief was that as Mahadebe, kumele ngiphaphe, ngibe forward, and not be a dull character. It is also thanks to Meshack Mavuso, one of the directors of Joburg Gen, that I secured the role. Mavuso saw my audition recording and said to me we want you, the legendary Suthukazi, to grace this show (Durban Gen).”

Now, the creative skill of Suthukazi is that of someone who got polished by Gibson Kente, The Father of Township Theatre.
“I started acting a long time ago and shared the performing arts platform with, among others, Nomhle Nkonyeni and Washington Sixolo,” Said Arosi. We performed together in the 1980s television drama called Undenzani Mmelwane. Somizi Mhlongo and Nomhle Nkonyeni’s child Thabang Nkonyeni were also there.”

Arosi counts, in her accolades, an FNB Vita Award for Best Leading Actress in the stage production called The Game.
The winner of several awards, including the South African Music Award and Kora Award, still sings.
It is a talent she got well known for over the years of belting out songs carrying evergreen messages such as Abelungu Abamnyama.
Suthukazi, with the amazingly multitalented instrumentalist Bheki Khoza is working in a Durban studio. They were bringing to life some of the seventy songs written by a journalist that lived abroad.

Born in Cala, Eastern Cape, Suthukazi is a former Cape Town ballet and modern jazz student. She has numerous solo albums under her belt, including Naked and Ubuntu.
