Read Time:3 Minute, 39 Second

Aw’ kodwa bakithi! Kwenzenjani kwakhihwa isililo on a rainy (at least in Joburg) Saturday, 11 February 2023. Because the previous night, at around 10 pm, a gunmen(was it izinkabi? we do not know yet)…Anyway, a chap out to murder approach a Durban Restaurant called Wish to shoot-to-kill 35-year-old rapper AKA. An unnamed bodyguard to AKA is said to have escaped with wounds. It turns out one (not six as allied to earlier)… It would seem one bullet in the head sent the body of AKA the direction of six feet under. Ewu! There is no yenza njani…,  It is the path of any-human-body (the temple) that the spirit inhabits on earth. Indeed of ngempela, heewu…, Kodwa yasho i-the Soul Brothers in the song Indlela Yethu. Confirming, with sadness, the unfortunate and tragic developments is a statement released by the parents of AKA -Tony and Lynn Forbes.

“Our son was loved and gave love in return. We are waiting for further details from the Durban Police.”

Ay’! Bad news about AK arrives amid the digestion of another sad affair about the passing of Jerry Whatt – band leader of the famed cover band The Rockets. The Cape Town group recently celebrated 50 years of playing and serving society through music. Back in the day, The Rockets opened for the Manhattans and the O’Jays. Not so long ago, with Luther Van Ross and Usher. Lekker hits fired by The Rockets include Loving You and the bouncy number called Situations. Ladies and gentle The Rockets…,

Apologies For The Diversion, Let Us Go Back  To AKA

Bakwethu, at 2.04 am, ThiVi Network receives with disbelieve) a WhatsApp message about the passing of rapper AKA. Known as Kiernan Jarryd Forbes to his family and those that grew up with him – at age 34, AKA leaves behind some go’d music. Ubaba ka Kairo, a daughter he has with DJ Zinhle, rose to prominence following the release of his 2011 album titled Alter Ego. Popularly known through Fela In Versace, a song featuring Kiddominant – More of his music got introduced to the Writer whilst chilling and cruising in a Mercedes Benz of a fast-driving school teacher from an elite  school in Houghton. A future interview idea with AKA formulated in the mind because… Well…, AKA touched the right button in that through his music presentation, he acknowledged, celebrated the heritage and paid tribute to those that came before.

In his Caiphus Song, he rides on a Caiphus Semenya evergreen – Matswale. There is also Sweet Free, which echoes some Fire, Passion and Ecstasy of the band Stimela. Just nje, with his approach to the two songs, AKA brought to mind a Sibongile Khumalo with no qualms about doing personalized renditions of music from what she called the South African Songbook – Mzansi Classics, baba wami. May the music and art spirit of AKA and the likes of Khumalo continue to flourish.

Police are still putting pieces of the puzzle together to establish the motive for his killing. In other news, two hours before AKA got murdered, pouncing on the Writer’s car is pair. One guy points a gun and demands the Writer opens the door as the other tries to open the front passenger door. The Writer looks up, cranks the engine…,  Khona lapho nje, a shot gets fired. The Writer speeds off to the nearest police station. No one got physically hurt. Uphenyo luyaqhubeka. If and when the killers of AKA are found, they ought to answer the question…, Why Would You Want AKA Dead. We sadly conclude with an…,

Ewu! Sesaphila okwezinyamazane ezweni lo baba Mkhulu. Hay’ Ngi grand ngawe ANC, shem. Ngila…!
