So, The Metro FM Music Awards Are Back With What?

Read Time:3 Minute, 52 Second

Not my handwriting, but that of my sisters-O! From Satafrika, i-dey ask-o!

Hay, bo- weh-o..! Bathi abuya, abuya nani lama Metro FM Music Awards (MMAs) after u five years wonke engekho?

Therefore, okokuqala of first of all. The MMA’s return with the date and place of staging. You know…, Izinto zaboma 29 April 2023 there-by Mbombela, Mpumalanga. Yes, in the Eastern Transvaal of van toeka af…, Indeed back in the days of…, Yey…,!!! Ngithi abo Koekermoer of hairy-fat-arms basa mura abo darkie baie-goed and getting away with it, nogal! Daai tyd some of us found comfort in songs of inspiration…, Sounds and Stuff Like  that of 7th Avenue by Cape Town-born Jonathan Butler, Matswale of Caiphus Semenya, …, Aahhh, here…!

Talking of evergreens…, Remember those days when we used to play our lovely music games of Splash with Potilo or Peacock? Iyoh, mara, ebusheni bethu! Back then we got groovy high because we shared i-groovy ye Sparleta…, And with our little feet kicked the dust to the jukebox or gumba-gumba sound of stuff sabo 707 by Om Alec Khaoli and Umoja. Because Higher and Higher, that is where we headed…, Yeah! izinto zabo No-No-No Senor. Eish….! Brenda Fassie and The Big Dudes…, Showbiz royalty right out of Africa baba wami.

Anyway…, In these last couple of days, on-air presenters of Metro FM keep threatening something gigantically-humongous to be revealed by the station – ‘tune in,’ they said. Hayi, ke! Baze bayizama iMbomela shem….! Ngama MMA’s! Skepsel, of the capital City of the Mpumalanga. Phela, with all the rich culture, heritage history, and creative talent it has sprouted…, Still, hardly anything national and showbiz-big happens, these days, in the capital city of the Province of Mpumalanga.

Hence it makes sense for the Mpumalanga Head of the Department for Culture, Sport and Recreation, Godfrey Ntombela, to believe the event will reignite tourism in the province. He hopes the MMA’s will benefit the creative industry. For long or short term, bab’ Ntombela?

Be that as it may, Metro FM tries to explain (ukuthi) what its awards come back with…,

Could it be they come back with just hot-air of empty self-punting public relations words while rough-riding on the art that is local music and artistic talent? Or do they really have something genuine to offer the domestic creative sector whilst still having the glitz and glamour of Showbiz? Khumbula phela, hey wena…! At the 2017 MMAs’ in Durban, the late hip hot star Riky Rik blasts Metro FM for, among others, a lack of support for local musicians (music). Consequently, today a Metro FM statement reads…, “The MMAs will provide a platform for interaction with music, business, public representatives, communities and the media, with a rationale to recognize and reward luminaries and excellence in the music industry.” Apparently, the design of the MMAs got meant to…, “Stimulate interest by unearthing talent and promoting development.”

Mhhh! As a result, some questions are dispatched to the peeps at SABC – the mother body of Metro FM…,

Talk About A Country Destroyed Through The Vote Of Its Citizens

First, how are the interactions going to unfold? What form, as in how are the luminaries and excellence getting rewarded?  You see, the return of MMA’s news comes just after the Writer got off the phone. A seasoned musician hears they are going to be awarded by some other award. The muso could not tell what the whole awarding entails because… Well, not much is explained except that some change might get thrown at their feet. Well…,

Back to Metro FM, it should be interesting to learn how the station intends (through the MMA’s) to unearth and develop talent.

Answers to the above pondering are to be added to this piece once received, if they ever get sent. Meanwhile, according to the Group Executive for SABC Radio Nada Wotshela, the MMAs are a property presenting an opportunity to…,“Amplify the SABC brand equity and strengthen efforts to take SABC brands to the people.” There are twenty categories in the MMAs. Albums, singles and recordings must have been released between 28 February 2022 to 28 February 2023. Now, to the interested, please note entries for the METRO FM Music Awards 2023 are open until  28 February 2023. Submissions are at www.metrofmmusicawards.co.za/  OR www.metrofmmusicawards.co.za/

Here…, In conclusion, sivala nge Peacock for you…,
