The Gospel of Rudeness

Read Time:2 Minute, 57 Second

Lack of respect was prevalent in South African showbiz. An internationally acclaimed local artist had, at some point, to use a toilet as a change room.

The unconditional apology to Rebecca Malope that surfaced this week exposes some of this disrespect. It revealed more than meets the eye. Said to have come from the gospel musician Bucy Radebe’s manager – the expression of regret relates to something that happened on Saturday, 30 April 2022. In the note, the manager only identifies himself as myself or I.

So, let the superintendent be a *MYSELF.

Suppose MYSELF and Bucy hold Dr Malope in the “highest regard,” as claimed, then the apology letter would not read the way it reads in several lines. First, the statement opens with MYSELF referring to himself as the “Manager…,” written with the capital letter M. However, Dr Malope’s manager is penned with the small letter m.

MYSELF writes…,

“I strongly advocated for Dr Malope to be one of the featured artists.”

So, Dr Malope was at the Sun City show primarily as a featured artist, not to be honoured as it got claimed. Dr Malope, it would seem, was not part of the initial plan, but MYSELF had to fight for her to feature on the live recording. Maybe as a favour and or as part of an additional marketing strategy.   And then MYSELF says…,

“Let me hasten to state that the main artist, Bucy Radebe, was on stage from around 19:30, and she was not part of the above backstage conversation.”

Mhhh! The minor artist, Dr Rebecca Malope, was backstage getting undermined.

The Queen of the gospel music had a Thursday of bliss leading to the Bucy Radebe’s live recording at Sun City Super Bowl. Malope’s spirit got lifted high when she got double celebrated.  The SABC 1 show Daily Thetha and radio station Kaya FM had fêted the gospel star through joyous reflection on her almost thirty-five years of professional music journey.

Then BOOM! Sin City events unfolded to dampen Dr Malope’s spirit.

“I am so hurt. I’ve never experienced such disrespect as I did last night. I thought I’d be fine this morning, but I’m not ok,” wrote Dr Malope on Twitter. According to Dr Malope’s manager, Nolu Malope, Bucy, and Rebecca had two rehearsals of the song Nkarabe. Nolu says last-minute changes got made on how the track performance was to occur on stage.

In the apology statement, MYSELF writes…,

“I simply stated to Dr Malope’s manager that if the song is not done, according to our plans, it will lose the whole idea of honouring her, and we may decide not to release it as it will be a waste to take it for post-production.

The bold is in the apology statement. It indicates emphasis. It is a line that fits well with the allegation that MYSELF told the gospel great to fuck off if she did not toe his line at the Sun City show. Now, it sounds like the change of song approach came from the Queen of the gospel music. Perhaps – a creative spur of the moment to enhance the presentation. Bucy and Rebecca might have handled the reshaping of the song better on stage as professional musicians.

But it appears MYSELF, the man in charge, was a stick to the script man. Was he the kind that cast his plans in stone? Even if it meant being insensitive to others in unfolding those visions?

*MYSELF is Bucy’s manager and husband, Thapelo Thoboke.
