The Sins of Csana

Inyani, sana, the title should be a perfect fit for a short feature film narrating the story of a romance gone sower for Nonguquko Mlaza. Born on 27 December 1985, ku la nginqi yaphaya e-Mahlathini in Port St Johns, Eastern Cape – Nonguquko goes by the stage name of Csana. The amapiano crowd will recognize her voice in the song Makudede by Heavy K. From sweeter parts of her childhood comes the monicker – Csana. She excelled in netball during high school days. Playing in the senior team with older girls earned her the name Sisana – little sister. It stuck.

EXPOSURE TO A VIOLENT AFFAIR

Growing up, the self-taught musician witnessed naked violence and brutality administered, primarily to her mother. As a grown woman, she recently had her brush with the love blues and bruises. MaNene nama nenekazi, Csana narrates a familiar story of a crude-cruel-cold-type of relationship serving a human can dish to someone they claim to love. But first, here is the irony. Csana has a good news new single. From her latest album, Inguquko, the song Ta Mcinci summons utata omcinci to welcome abakhongi that have come to pay lobola. It is an animate vibe, a celebratory tune with an easy sing-along chorus and a wedding groove.

“Like any loving parent, my mother wanted progress for me. That is why before she passed on 29 July 2022, she pleaded for the recording and release of my new music,” says Csana

AND THEN THE HORROR OF A NIGHTMARE AFFAIR

Inguquko is a record offering that also comes following a breakup with an ex who seemed to have lured Csana into a nest of thorns and heart-stabbing nails. Among others, she got accused of being a witch as umXhosa because “amaXhosa get brought up on a diet of witchcraft.”

The gifted musician narrates…,

“At some point, for three days, he would go to work without leaving me money for food. All I would have is water. Then there was this time he demanded sex because, yena, he heals through intercourse.”

Things got so bad in love for Csana that General Bantu Holomisa, a relative of Csana by clan, was asked to intervene. Get the whole story in the interview with ThiviNetwork & The Peeps here…,

AND THE MUSICIAN SING – GO AWAY, YOU FROG OF A THING

Back to music in Inguquko, a listener may be pardoned to conclude in the song Besimuncu, Csana sings about her ex-lover. Opening the tune is mocking laughter, paving the way for taunting lyrics. The singer declares she is an ancestor in mjolo things. Hence, she sheds no tears over a breakup. Two or three lines go something like this…,

‘Go away, you frog of a thing. After all, you and I were not that kosher-cozy.’

One more delightful song from Inguquko is Ngilimpondo – a number starting with izihlabo, the pre-song guitar solo exploits zomaskandi ezivusa usinga. Overall, Csana’s music is a lively and spirit evoking music ngala way of traditional music rooted Afro-pop with blends of maskandi and some mbaqanga.

Perhaps at another time, a film with a different title could presented…
